There is plenty for Albany State fans to be hyped about as the Golden Rams get set for the 2025

football campaign, bringing back one of the most experienced rosters in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC). The anticipation surrounding the upcoming season is palpable, as the team prepares to showcase its depth and talent. Third-year head coach, Quinn Gray, has meticulously crafted an offense loaded with playmakers, spearheaded by the standout graduate quarterback Isaiah Knowles. Last season, Knowles demonstrated his exceptional skills by throwing for over 2,500 yards and an impressive 32 touchdowns, establishing himself as a formidable presence on the field. His ability to read defenses and make quick decisions has made him a cornerstone of the Golden Rams' offensive strategy.

In addition to Knowles, his top targets—Jamill Williams, Javion Jackson, and Devon Dorsey—return to form a dynamic receiving corps that is sure to challenge opposing defenses. Each of these wide receivers brings unique attributes to the game, with Williams known for his speed, Jackson for his reliable hands, and Dorsey for his ability to create separation. Furthermore, the team is bolstered by the presence of dynamic sophomore running back Tiant Wyche, who averaged an impressive 5.5 yards per rush in 2024. Wyche's agility and vision make him a constant threat, capable of breaking tackles and changing the momentum of a game.

On the defensive side of the ball, while only linebackers Andrew Ruffin and Aydin Henningham return, they are joined by defensive lineman Derrick Drayton, who is recognized as a game-changer in the trenches. Drayton's ability to disrupt opposing offenses and apply pressure on the quarterback will be critical for the Golden Rams as they seek to establish dominance on defense. His presence, combined with the leadership of Ruffin and Henningham, creates a formidable defensive unit that aims to stifle the competition.

The slate is drama-filled, starting August 30 at Shaw, a team that defeated Albany State 43–40

last season. This initial matchup is particularly significant, as Shaw will be looking to build on their previous victory. Their quarterback, David Green, returns as a dual-threat playmaker, capable of both passing and running, which adds an extra layer of challenge for the Golden Rams' defense. The game promises to be an intense battle right from the outset.

A huge non-conference matchup arrives on September 13 against Florida A&M, a powerhouse that features star

quarterback Jeremy Moussa. Known for his strong arm and strategic play, Moussa has been instrumental in leading Florida A&M to success in recent seasons. Coupled with a topflight defense that allowed them to dominate the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) in the past few seasons, this game will serve as a significant test for Albany State. The Golden Rams will need to bring their A-game to compete against such formidable opponents.

As SIAC play commences, Albany State will face its own set of challenges. Benedict College is set to return with defensive star K. J. Phillips, a player known for his ability to disrupt plays and create turnovers. Their strong offense will also pose a significant threat, making this matchup crucial for Albany State’s aspirations. Additionally, Tuskegee will be coming to Albany for Homecoming on October 18, bringing with them a potent running game led by back Reginald Ruffin Jr. This game is not only important for the standings but also for the morale of the team and the excitement of the fans.

The regular-season finale, “The Fountain City Classic” on November 8, will once again pit Albany State against arch-rival Fort Valley State. This historic rivalry is always a highlight of the season, and this year promises to be no different, especially with one of the league's top quarterbacks in Kelvin Durham leading Fort Valley State. The stakes will be high, as both teams will be looking to secure bragging rights and a favorable position heading into the postseason.

With a seasoned quarterback, game-changing weaponry, and a defense laden with leaders, the Golden Rams have the talent to make a serious run at the SIAC title. However, they will have to navigate a killer schedule and beat some of Division II football's best talent in the process. The combination of experience and skill will be vital as Albany State aims to rise to the top of the conference and make a mark in the upcoming season.
